Activity Name:
Smith Family student2student reading program
CAS element(s) involved:
Service
Description of Proposed Activity:
I will be taking part in the student2student reading activity in which I will be paired up with a student from Year 2 - 8 from a disadvantaged family who is 2 years behind on their reading skills. Every week I will call them up at least 3 times a week for 20 minutes and help them with their reading.
Proposed Activity Supervisor:
Jo Carter (Smith Family coordinator)
What challenges and/or new skills will this activity provide?
This is a new activity for me as I have had no previous experience in the student2student program so this will be a bit of a challenge in terms of becoming familiar and comfortable with the program. The children that we are paired up with are also from a drastically different family background to my own so it may be a bit confronting initially, although I definitely think that this will allow me to gain a more deep, realistic understanding of the lives of these children as I will have a personal connection. I think that this will help me appreciate the true value of education which (I hate to sound cliché) is something I often take for granted and hopefully this will act as a foundation for my future involvement in similar volunteering programs.
What do you want to achieve from your participation in this activity?
I hope to establish a strong relationship with my reader and help them improve their skills and passion for reading!
What evidence could be appropriate for this activity?
- a weekly log on the progress of the week
- recordings (of myself only) on the phone with my reader
- A report by my volunteer supervisor regarding my commitment throughout the program
Which learning outcomes may be appropriate to reflect on for this activity?
o Undertaken new challenges
o Shown perseverance and commitment
o Considered the ethical implications of my actions
o Developed new skills
