After 6 months of reading, Lili and I have finally finished all of the books we've been sent during the program! I can't believe how quickly it has gone and today's last call was definitely much more difficult than I thought it would be as we had to say goodbye after so many months of calls. I don't think I can really express how much I've enjoyed the program and while student2student is marketed as being a "volunteering" program, seemingly insinuating that we are offering a service to our readers, I definitely think I have benefitted just as much as Lili. Being able to chat to Lili and her mum and build a strong friendship with them both, I have found that I always look forward to the calls and it has never felt like a chore to me, even during periods where I am short of time (eg. exam weeks), getting to call Lili has been fun and a good bit of down time. I definitely think I have also developed a lot of skills through this program, obviously things like finding the best way to help Lili with her reading but also things such as communication skills, organisation skills and commitment have been vital over the past 6 months and will continue to be extremely valuable for my future pursuits and personal development.
Also, in exciting news, Lili's mum told me that Lili was recently tested again for her reading age and she is now only 6 months behind her expected reading ability which is amazing news, as it is a huge improvement on her reading age at the beginning of the program when she was roughly 2 years behind.
