Activity Name:
Sewing clothing for Nepal and Nicu Vests
CAS element(s) involved:
Creativity & Service
GROUP
Description of Proposed Activity:
In Term 2 2015, I will be working with a small group of girls to plan and sew children's skirts for young girls in a clinic in Nepal as a part of the relief effort following the recent earthquakes. Using the skills we've learnt from Term 2, we will then move onto sewing Nicu Vests for premature babies in the NICU unit of The Children's Hospital at Westmead.
Proposed Activity Supervisor:
Mrs White and Rev King
What challenges and/or new skills will this activity provide?
I will be learning out to use the sewing and overlocking machine - skills that I had learnt briefly a few years ago but have since forgotten. We will also learn to make sewing patterns and also as a group improve our planning and management skills as this will be planned almost entirely by ourselves in conjunction with our supervisors.
One of the major challenges we will face will be time management as we will have limited access to the sewing machines throughout the week and we have a strict deadline for the Nepal project as Ms King will be leaving for Nepal at the end of term. Furthermore, both projects will be difficult as we will be dealing with emotionally confronting and sensitive issues and fundraising may become an issue for the NICU project.
What do you want to achieve from your participation in this activity?
I'm hoping that we will be able to create some form of tangible assistance for both projects and I will gain a better understanding of both the effects of the Nepal earthquake and the predicament premature babies and their mothers face. I'm hoping that the NICU project will be something that we can continue throughout the next term as well (irrespective of CAS) and hopefully years below will be able to take over the project.
What evidence could be appropriate for this activity?
- Photo evidence
- Report from supervisor
Which learning outcomes may be appropriate to reflect on for this activity? (NB You do not have to meet every outcome for each activity. All eight must be achieved over the duration of the CAS Program and before you are signed off)
o Planned and initiated activities
o Worked collaboratively with others
o Engages with issues of global importance
o Considered the ethical implications of my actions
o Developed new skills
